ATEX Enclosures¶

If your site has hazardous areas where explosive atmospheres may be present, for example where flammable gases, vapours or dust are handled, equipment there must comply with the ATEX Directive. Busroot machine connectors can be supplied in certified ATEX enclosures for these areas.
What ATEX means¶
The ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) sets requirements so that electrical and mechanical equipment used in explosive atmospheres does not become a source of ignition. Compliance is mandatory for this equipment in the European Economic Area (EEA).
How the connectors are made ATEX compliant¶
The machine connectors are PLCs used only to capture data and send it wirelessly, over your site's Wi-Fi or a dedicated network with 4G gateway routers (see Shop floor network). To make them ATEX compliant, they are fitted inside fully certified ATEX enclosures:
- ATEX enclosure. The enclosure is certified to the appropriate ATEX category and zone classification.
- Component integration. All the device components, including the PLC and wireless modules, are mounted securely inside the enclosure.
- Ingress protection. The enclosure is sealed against dust and gas, so it operates safely in hazardous areas.
- Enclosure integrity. Cable glands, connectors and mounting methods keep the enclosure's original ATEX certification.
You can then use the connectors in hazardous areas without any further certification.
What you need to know¶
- Certification. The ATEX certification applies to the enclosure and assembly as supplied.
- Installation. Install the devices according to the enclosure manufacturer's guidelines and your ATEX zoning requirements.
- Operation. The unit only collects data. It does not control actuators, motors or other equipment that could be a source of ignition.
- Maintenance. Only qualified people may open the enclosure, for service or inspection, in a safe environment and in line with ATEX regulations.
