Arduino Opta Configuration

Arduino Optas are normally supplied already flashed with the latest firmware and configured for your network. Configure one yourself only if you have agreed this with support, or if support asks you to, for example after a change of Wi-Fi network.

What you need

  • A laptop, or an Android phone or tablet, with the Chrome browser. Other browsers don't work. If you use a mobile device, make sure it is fully charged.
  • A USB-C cable to connect it to the Opta.
  • Your Wi-Fi SSID and password.
  • The Opta's device ID and access token. Open Busroot as an Admin, go to Devices, and view the device. Check that the device ID matches the one printed on the front of the Opta.

It helps to have Busroot open in one browser tab and the programming tool in another.

Flashing the device

  1. Connect the Opta to your computer or mobile device with the USB-C cable.
  2. In Chrome, open the Busroot programming tool: https://outputindustries.gitlab.io/busroot-webdfu/
  3. Double-press the Reset button on the Opta with a pin or pen. The green LED pulses slowly.
  4. Enter the Wi-Fi SSID and password.
  5. Copy the device ID and access token into their fields.
  6. If the Opta uses a cellular module, choose it in Communication Mode. See Arduino Opta cellular connectivity.
  7. Click Connect to connect the browser to the Opta. Its name ends with "Bootloader".
  8. In the pop-up window, click Pair.
  9. Click Download and wait for it to finish.

When the Opta connects, its light flashes green. See LED codes.

Configuring the device

  1. In Chrome, open https://www.serialterminal.com/index.html.
  2. Press the Reset button on the Opta once.
  3. Click Connect in the browser and select the Arduino device in the list.
  4. Paste your configuration token into the input bar and click Send.
    1. The terminal confirms the configuration and shows the device trying to connect to the network.

Before you finish

  • Check that the device ID on the Opta matches the device in Busroot.
  • If an energy meter is connected over Modbus, check that its address is set correctly (001 if it is the only meter). See Energy meters.
