Energy Meters

Energy meters measure the electrical energy each machine uses, on single-phase and three-phase supplies. Busroot uses the readings to show energy consumed, energy per unit and wasted energy, and it can also use electrical load to tell when a machine is productive.

How meters connect

Most meters connect to an Arduino Opta over an RS485 (Modbus) link, and the Opta sends the readings to Busroot. One Opta can read up to 6 meters. Each meter on the same Opta needs its own Modbus address.

The Shelly Pro EM connects to your Wi-Fi directly and does not need an Opta.

A meter sends the MQTT signals electrical_kwh, electrical_kwh_interval or electrical_kw. See MQTT.

What the meters measure

The meters measure active energy consumed, in kWh. Busroot does not calculate energy from current and voltage. Power in kW is the rate at which that energy is used.

Choosing a meter

Supply Phases Hardware Page
Up to 100 A 1 RS 2224405 1 Phase < 100A
Up to 100 A 3 RS Pro 2369297 3 Phase < 100A
Up to 4000 A 3 Carlo Gavazzi EM210 (RS 2238048) with Rogowski coils (RS 2224405) 3 Phase < 4000A
50 A or 120 A clamps 1 Shelly Pro EM Shelly Pro EM

Each meter except the Shelly Pro EM also needs an Arduino Opta.

Setting up energy monitoring in Busroot

  • Energy price and CO2. Set the price per kWh and CO2 per kWh on Account.
  • Stations that only have a meter. A station can represent an energy meter rather than a production asset, for example a plant incomer or a line meter. Set it as Meter Only. See Station.
  • Plant or group energy from one meter. A plant or station group can take its energy from a designated meter instead of adding up its stations. See Plant and Station Group.
  • Productive status from power. A station can be counted as productive when its load is above a threshold. See Asset Utilisation.

Capabilities and metrics

Energy meters provide the data for Energy Efficiency: Energy consumed, Average power, Energy per unit, Energy per production hour, Wasted energy and Power vs nominal. They can also provide the productive signal for Asset Utilisation.
